Best Travel Insurance Companies of 2025

Best Overall, Most Affordable : Travelex

Travelex

Travelex

  • Number of comprehensive single-trip plans: 3
  • Trip cancellation max (budget plan): $10,000
  • Emergency medical max (budget plan): $25,000
Why We Chose It

Travelex’s plans have the lowest premiums Investopedia found. In fact, the most expensive Travelex plan is still less expensive than many competitors’ cheapest plans. And yet, Travelex scored highest when we looked at the value provided by plans compared to the cost. The Essential Plan is good for budget-minded travelers, with competitive trip delay and lost baggage coverage. More co💎mprehensive plans are still affordable, and there are lots of optional add-ons that let you customize your plan.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Best prices for cheapest and most expensive plans

  • Budget plan has g♑ood lost baggage and trip delay coverag💙e

  • Budget plan includes pre-existing coverage

  • Many optional🍨 upgrades available, including cancel-for-any-reason

  • Longest free-look period

Cons
  • Low maximum limi🌜ts for several important coverages

  • Maximum coverage duration is only 30 days

  • Long look-back period for preexisting conditions

  • Pre-existing co🅰ndition waiver and cancel-for-any-reason coverage only available on the most expensive plan

Overview

Travelex excels in providing lots of coverage choices. It offers three comprehensive plans and three other specialized plans (a standalone post-departure medical plan and two flight-focused plans). They all cover🀅 trip delay, interruption, and cancellation; lost or damaged baggage; and emergency medical care. On top of that, there are at least seven optional upgrades available with every comprehensive plan—nine with the top-tier Ultimate plan. Its cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) add-on covers up to 75% of your trip cost.

The low-cost Essential plan provides 100% trip cancellation up to $10,000 and good coverage for trip delays and lost or damaged baggage. But coverage for missed connections and emergency medical care is minimal. And the look-back period for 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:preexisting conditions is a relatively long 180 days. That means health conditions that existed within the past six m𒆙onths are excluded from medical coverage. The Essential pl💫an provides no option to waive that exclusion.

You may have a long-term health condition that would not be considered a preexisting condition for travel insurance if it is well controlled and hasn’t required new treatment or medication changes during the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:look-back period. Travel insurance companies also look to see if any new conditions were diagnosed during this time. A shorter look-back period lowers the chances of health conditions bein🍷g considered pre-existing.

The Travelex Ultimate plan provides much better coverage than the Ess𒆙ential, including a $50,000 limit for trip cancellation. Kids under 17 are also included for free.

All plans let you add extra coverage for rental car damage, adventure sports, and rental property security deposits. The Ultimate plan also lets you buy 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:cancel-for-any-reason coverage and additional medical coverage. Plus, 𒈔the preexisting condition lookback period is only 90 days, and the exclusion can be waived if you’ve bought the plan within 21 𒉰days after your first trip payment.

Travelex Insurance Services is based in Omaha, Nebraska. It was founded in 1996 when the Travelex Group bought Mutual of Omaha’s travel insurance business. Policies are underwritten by Zurich American Insurance Company, whose financial strength is rated superior by credit rating agency AM Best.

Best for Older Adults, Best for Extended Travel or Living Abroad : HTH

HTH Worldwide
HTH Worldwide.
  • Number of comprehensive single-trip plans: 3
  • Trip cancellation max (budget plan): $5,000
  • Emergency medical max (budget plan): $75,000
Why We Chose It

HTH Travel Insurance is the best travel insurance company for older adults because it has strong medical coverage, even with its budget plan. Several other plans cover preexisting medical conditions or offer a waiver for them if you buy the plan soon after you book your trip. Plus, HTH offers a wide variety of medical-only plans that cover people up to age 95. Some medical plans include primary health coverage, which can reduce claim time for older adults because Medicare does not provide medical coveওrage when travel🎉ing internationally in most situations.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Budget plan includes high levels of medical evacuation and trip interruption cov💙erage

  • Some medical plans available up to age 95

  • Annual multi-t♔rip plans cover pree༒xisting conditions

  • Long-term medi𒊎cal plans available for those living abroad

  • Cancel-for-any-reason coverage offered

Cons
  • Most plans require existing health insurance

  • Budget plan has no coverage options for pree𒉰xisting co🅠nditions

Overview

HTH is an excellent option for older adults, especially if you’re worried about medical 🍸problems while traveling. The budget-oriented TripProtector Economy plan offers the highest percentage of trip interruption reimbursement (125%) and medical evacuation coverage ($500,000) Investopedia found among the companies we researched.

While premiums are middle-of-the-pack, this plan's maximum trip cancellation coverage is only $5,000, and it doesn’t include an option to waive the exclusion of preexisting conditions from medical coverage. However, the next level up, TripProtector Classic, has a cancellation limit of $25,000 and will cover preexisting conditions if you buy the plan within 14 days of your initial trip deposit, with a 60-day lookback period.

Several HTH standalone medical plans are available to applicants up to age 95 and cover preexisting conditions. The TravelGap Voyager plan also offers primary medical coverage, which can be important for people on Medicare or without any health insurance at all. Although some Medigap plans cover emergency care overseas, Original Medicare and 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Medicare Advantage generally don’t. A traveꩲl plan that offers secondary coverage may require you to show that you have a primary insurance provider before accepting you, and then make you file any medical claims first with the primary provider. That can cause extra headaches and delay reimbursement.

HTH also stands out for a few other benefits. The TripProtector Preferred plan includes cancel-for-any reason coverage for up to 75% of eligible costs. In addition, HTH is great for people spending extended time overseas because it off🐠ers annual multi-trip plans and, for people who live abroad, long-term medical plans. This makes se♉nse because HTH is administered by World Insurance Services, which was founded in 1997 to help international travelers and expatriates.

HTH Travel Insurance is based in Pennsylvania. Nationw🔯ide underwrites some plans.

Best for Cruises : Seven Corners

Seven Corners

Seven Corners

  • Number of comprehensive single-trip plans: 2
  • Trip cancellation max (cruise plan): $30,000
  • Emergency medical max (cruise plan): $250,000
Why We Chose It

Seven Corners has the most comprehensive cruise coverage of any plan Investopedia researched, making it the hands-down winner for this category. Its cruise 🌌insurance won the top score on eight of the 13 criteria we evaluated, including coverage for missed connections, emergency medical care, and itinerary change—mishaps that are particularly important for cruisers. The plan even offers add-ons for CFAR and interruption-for-any-reason (IFAR) coverages that reimburse up to 𝔍75% of your trip’s nonrefundable costs.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Cruise insurance has top-of-the-li꧃ne cov✃erage for nine important mishaps

  • Good coverage for medical evacuation

  • CFAR and IFAR optional coverage offer 75% reimburse🗹ment

  • Other Seven Corners plans offer lower rates if you ☂need 𓆉less coverage

Cons
  • Highest premiums

  • Fewer cruise-specific plans than competitors

Overview

Seven Corners’ cruise insurance includes these reimbursement leve🍌ls, which are the best we found:

  • Trip cancellation: 100% up to $30,000
  • Trip interruption: 150%
  • Trip delay per day: $250
  • Trip delay maximum: $1,000
  • Missed connection: $1,500
  • Itinerary change: $500
  • Emergency medical: $250,000
  • Optional CFAR and IFAR coverage: 75% of non-refundable costs

It also includes $500,000 for emergency medical evacuaಞtion.

The main downside is the cost. Seven Corners has the highest premiums among the cruise insurance providers we researched. But if you don’t need as much coverage as the cruise plan offers, you could do well with the Seven Corners Trip Protector Basic plan, a general travel insurance plan whose premium is about 43% lower. It still offers 100% coverage for trip cancellations up to $30,000. Other coverages are lower but still may 💙be adequate for many travelers’ needs. Missed cruise connections are covered for up to $500.

Seven Corners is based in Carmel, Indiana, and was 🅠founded ⛦in 1997.

Cons

Overview

World Nomads is a good insurer if you’re looking for adventure. The lower-cost Standard plan covers activities such as skiing within bounds, SCUBA diving up to 165 feet deep, rock climbing, mountain biking, white water rafting or kayaking, bungee jumping, parasailing, and ziplining. Choose an upgraded plan for heliskiing, hang gliding, cave diving, skydiving, or piloting an airplane, aﷺmong other thingsꦜ. is on the site. Your gear is covered, too—up to $1,000 for the Standard plan, and $3,000 for the elite Epic plan.

The Standard plan provides excellent coverage, with a few exceptions. Trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage are capped at $2,500. And it doesn’t cover preexisting conditions at all. Higher-priced plans offer a waiver for thiﷺs exclusion, but only if you buy your policy within seven days of making the first trip payment. No plans offer primary medical coverage.

The Epic plan has a more reasonable cancellation coverage limit of $15,000 and outstanding coverage for other travel mishaps. But you’ll pay for it. The Epic plan is the most expensive we reviewed, and the Standard plan is among the costliest lowest-tier plans. Still, it may be ܫworth it if you want an all-in-one plan that covers a lot of activities and excels in other coverage. There’s an annual multi-trip policy, too, if you’re planning a 💙lot of trips in a year.

Sydney, Australia-based World Nomads began selling travel insurance in 2002, focusing onꦉ independent trav🌃elers. Its U.S. headquarters is in Oakland, California. Policies are serviced by Trip Mate and underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company. United States Fire Insurance Company is owned by Crum & Forster, an insurance company with an excellent financial strength rating that was founded in 1822.
